NEW YORK — Pfizer Inc. has approved a generic version of a heartburn-causing drug for sale under the brand name Celebrex, according to a Pfizer announcement Tuesday.
The generic version of Pfizer’s prescription drug Celebrex is also available for sale under the brand name Revatio, the company said.
The drug, which Pfizer acquired for $1.5 billion last year, is a generic version of the older, widely prescribed Pfizer’s heartburn drug, called Zetia.
The Pfizer announcement comes just days after the FDA approved a stronger version of the drug in October after a lengthy and expensive review. The new drug, called Nexium, is being sold under the brand name Vioxx, the company said.
The FDA said it is reviewing whether the generic version of Celebrex should be sold to consumers.
“As a general rule, the decision to promote a product or service for a reason is final,” Pfizer said in a statement.
The drug’s benefits, including lower heartburn and similar symptoms, have long been overshadowed by a recent warning that the drug may trigger a dangerous allergic reaction to its active ingredient, the active ingredient in Celebrex. The warning was also directed at women who may be pregnant or who are breastfeeding because the drug could harm them.
The warning comes just two months after Pfizer said it was reviewing whether the drug could be sold in certain countries and its maker said it would seek FDA approval for it.
Pfizer shares fell more than 1 percent in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
Pfizer shares rose 2 percent in after-hours trading, up 3 percent, as much as a penny, on the New York Stock Exchange.
In the wake of the FDA’s approval of Celebrex, Pfizer said it was looking at other ways to treat heartburn.
The company said it will update patients and pharmacists who are taking the drug and will review the information at the end of the month.
